Is there anyway to get work experience in Television Production, or any other media aspects - at 16 in the?
Hi, I've already had 3 days work experience at BBC radio Norfolk. I want to try and get something, anything, on television production. I am an aspiring Film Director, and have made lots of short movies myself. I'm currently writing a feature-length script also. Where can I start? I don't care if it's making tea and coffee or clearing up trash - if it's behind the scenes of the set, I'll do it..!

Buying a home in Norfolk, VA but scared of the floodings. Any safe areas in Norfolk?
I was trying to search for maybe a flood map, but no luck. I'm thinking about maybe just buying a house in Virginia Beach that's closer to Norfolk. My fiance works in the Naval base so traffic is horribe coming from Suffolk area. Please help.

Answer 1 :
That whole area is less than 20 ft above sea level. You might find a home on higher ground or mound of earth, but those would be rare. Shop around is the best advice I can give you. You might find a home on higher ground, but not if a good neighborhood. You might find a home but can't afford it. There seems to always be something that you'll have to compromise on when looking for a home. I lived in that area for 3 years during the early 1980s. We had a very difficult time finding housing we could afford in a good, clean, safe neighborhood. Most of what we looked at that time were close to being tenement type housing. I think that if you stay away from the James River and ocean and the bay, you'll probably reduce your chance of storm flooding.

Thinking about relocating to Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area with hubby and school age kids. Any advice?
Moving from southwest PA, looking for good schools, reasonable cost of living, cultural and ethnic diversity. Will likely work in norfolk at the Va Beach border.

Answer 1 :
it depends were he or you will be working. traffic there is a bitch! live close to work You may want to rent for a short time give time to find the ''right house''
Answer 2 :
Traffic is horrible. make sure you do not have to drive on I64 between 2:30 and 6 or drive through the downtown or midtown tunnel between 7 and 9 AM or 2:30-6 PM. Va beach is the largest city in VA in population and has the 2nd largest school system in VA. All of Va Beach's schools are fully accredited. Norfolk is an urban school system. It is one of the best urban school districts in the state. The cost of living is normal. Norfolk has two great colleges, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. Virginia Wesleyan College and Regent University are in VA Beach. This area is diverse.
Answer 3 :
If you have small children stay away from this area it is known as the pedophile capitol o the country. The only place worse is ashtabula ohio which has had an unussual increase in pedophilia case in the past 6 months or so.

Where do kids in Norfolk ,VA get a work permit if they are 13?

Answer 1 :
I grew up in Hampton, VA. We were able to get a work permit from our guidance counselors at school. But my guidance counselor would only issue them for students 15+ with decent grades.
Answer 2 :
i don't think kids are even allowed to work at that age
Answer 3 :
Depending on the laws in that state, you may or may not be able to work. If you know you are, your school will be able to provide you with a work permit.
Answer 4 :
Sorry, dude. I think you gotta be 14. Here's where it says so in Virginia employment law... TITLE 40.1. LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT CHAPTER 5. CHILD LABOR § 40.1-88. Work-training certificate A work-training certificate shall permit the employment of a child between fourteen and sixteen years of age during school hours when enrolled in a regular school work-training program pursuant to a written agreement containing the same provisions as specified in § 40.1-89.

MASSAGE THERAPISTS!!! I want to work at an airport doing onsite chair massage.?
Hello. This is mainly for massage therapists but any with good suggestions may answer. Well, I am going to be starting my own business with massage thereapy. Each day, I plan on working at Norfolk International Airport here in Virgina (Not too far from Virginia Beach, VA) but I don't know whom I should contect to see what I need to work there. I would just set up at different terminals each day from like 9am-1pm and do the massages for $15 for 15min or $30 for 30min plus tips if they wish. Who do I contact to get the green light to be able to make this thing into a reality? Also, if known, what would be the cost to operate this? Okay, thanks again for all of your help.

Answer 1 :
the airport
Answer 2 :
I guess the only thing you can do is go to the airport and ask to speak to a manager, or set up an appt.
Answer 3 :
not a good idea, if you injure someone expecially from another country it be bad, the airports wont allow the risk pr liability to its guests.
Answer 4 :
Hi right what you need to do is simple, you will need to speak to one of the supervisors to see if you would be able to get a staff pass so you would be able to stay in the airport,it would cost a bit to start of with....once you get all the equipment and stuff, but it won't be that much. Hope this helps Amb D.S
Answer 5 :
You need to contact the airport directly to find out who arranges their leasing agreements. But I think it is VERY unlikely they will let you set up in the terminals - particularly with heightened security issues. You would most likely need to lease a store in the commecial area of the airport like the other vendors.

About BNSF or Norfolk Southern. Which is the better railroad to work for

BNSF or Norfolk Southern. Which is the better railroad to work for?
Since becoming very interested in working for the railroad, i've come across people that have given their opinions about these two companies and which to apply. Both have negative views but is there really much difference? Also, Im curious as to how many years it would take to get a off of the "extra board" and onto a 9-5 schedule? thats just one other thing people seem to always mention but never elaborate on... As always any response is greatly appreciated.
Rail - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The differences are going to be by terminal more than company. Both companies have very similar work rules and benefit packages so not a lot of difference. I have heard NS has a stricter discipline policy but that that can change overnight. No two terminals or seniority districts will be alike, If you hire on at a location with primarily road assignments you will work road and unscheduled assignments almost forever. If you have a hub or large yard area, there are more assigned jobs with "part time" (40 hour) work assignments. 9 - 5 ?? You will have to work a lot of years to work into days, I know men with 20 years and the best they can hold is afternoons. If you need day shifts, perhaps railroading is not the job for you. Not to be discouraging but that's Just the way it is. Good Luck
Answer 2 :
I have been working for BNSF going on 3 years, and you will hear the same stuff about whatever railroad you work for, they will say they butcher you or work you too often etc etc... Getting off the extra board will take you at least 5 to 10 years. I currently work a night switcher in the yard. I will have to work this at least 2 more years (rough guestimate) before even qualifying for the road extra board. As Rango mentioned, it takes about 20-25+ years for a "1st" shift job, the old heads (with loads of seniority) will have these jobs, and where I work the shifts are: 1st: 7a-3p, 2nd 3p-11p, graveyard: 11p - 7a. But my terminal is very big so there are jobs going on duty all the time. as for me I go to work at 11:59p and get off at 7:59a. If hiring on a major BNSF terminal (IE Chicago, Seattle, LA, KC, Fort Worth etc...) here is a guestimated breakdown of a typical career. 1/2 year: training and qualifications 1/2 year - 5 years: Yard assignment (extra brd and or set job) 5-10 years: Road extra board, or you can keep building your seniority in the yard. 10-30 years: you probably have enough seniority to work as a pool conductor with advancement to engineer during this time. Again each railroader is different so I wont say this is how you have to work a career, just take it the way you want to take it. I look forward to going on the road becuase I have liked traveling and I work in a great area. Hope this helps, and best of luck in your choice.
Answer 3 :
I work for BNSF. I hired out in Feb 2006 as a brakeman. I have since worked in about 4 different terminals (from Ft. Worth, Tx to Gillette, Wy). In my 2.5 years of railroading, i have already passed my engineer test, and am a certified locomotive engineer. However, even with my engineer certification, i am currently holding an extra board as a conductor. I can hold a regular job in the yard that i run out of. It is afternoon's, 3-11pm. Most yard assignments are 8 hours, and depending on your local agreement, you could be paid a second days pay if you hit 9 hours, though this rarely happens. Most yards use the shift cycle, which is shifts start around 7, 3, and 11. In the smaller yards there might only be one ot two crews at 12 hour intervals. In this situation you would probably work about 10 hours 4 days out of the week, and 3-6 hours the remainder (i say remainder because it could be a 6 or 7 day job). BTW these jobs run very high seniority, and most people holding those jobs have been working for the RR for well over 30 years. To answer your question, about how many years it would take to get off the extra board: minimun of 4. This is an estimate, and could be 2 years, or could be 10 years depending on where you hire-out at. Any Pool-Turn is just like an extra board... They can call you at any time, day or night. (a pool turn is like from Fort Worth, Tx to Temple, Tx. or From Needles, Ca to Winslow, Az. You only run on that track, nothing else. BUt they don't call you to go to work until a train has arrived and it's your turn to go to work) I have heard the same thing that Rango heard, that NS has a far more rigid discpilpne system in place. (for instance i have heard of an NS engineer running past a red signal, and he is fired... no second chance..., On the BNSF i know of a couple engineers who have ran red signals and are still working) On the other hand, i would not want to work on the other end of a pool where that guy was coming toward me if he had ran a signal in the past. I cannot say what the NS policy is, because i never have, and never will work for the NS. If you decide to get a railroad job, and decide to go the BNSF route, make sure that you apply for the positions that are not primary recall. (The former Santa Fe territories have primary recall and this means that you have to go back to that place for 5 years if they need you. you get 24-48 hours to move.... the non-primary recall locations do not have such control over your life.) I assume that you are interested in these companies because you are out east somewhere, and they both run closely, so you shouldn't have to worry about the primary-recall. One last thing, the soomer you hire-out the better. You will have more seniority, and will be able to hold that dream job sooner. I hope that I wasn't too long winded for you. Good Luck!

Yes there is.

Hi, In my opinion, there are good online jobs available. Over the last 2 years I have been working online as a virtual customer service rep for a credit card company. It’s honestly a very easy job---I mainly answer e-mails, add features and address general inquiries. If I can give one piece of advice though when looking for an online job---NEVER pay a start up fee to join a work at home company or directory. Very few legitimate companies will require you to pay them in order for them in turn to pay you. It defeats the point! Moreover, there are plenty of free sites available! :) Depending on your skill set---there is a tremendous range in employment opportunities you might be interested in, both part time or full time—anywhere from data entry and transcription services---to virtual customer care---to writing articles/product reviews and webpage design. For a list of very good companies and directories that I’ve been successful with and also a guide to avoiding online business scams see: http://topfreeworkathomejobs.blogspot.com (The companies listed should not charge any start up fees nor hidden fees down the road) I also make good extra money answering paid surveys. I’ll usually spend a couple of hours a day answering surveys and l make approx $40 a day = $950-$1200 a month. For the most profitable free sites see: http://topfree2joinsurveysites.blogspot.com/

List of companies(with websites) offering genuine work at home jobs is available at http://www.pcworkathome.net . Many of these companies have been in business for several years
Answer 7 :
I tried over 18 home businesses in the course of 3 years so please forgive the length of this post but you will find it very informative. Learn from my mistakes! Also make sure to read all the way to the bottom because I have included a list of the top 10 work at home scams. I am a mother of two little girls who are actually tugging on my arm as I write this so I will try to be brief. Many people are looking for work from home companies. All the scams definitely create a big problem but also, there is a problem of people misunderstanding the difference between work from home "jobs" and work from home opportunities. There really are not work from home “jobs”. To get that you have to start working for a company in their offices first, then they MAY allow you to take the job home. Most of the work from home opportunities that are legitimate offers are not an hourly pay type job. They are business opportunities that help you in starting your own business from your home. What you should do first is to decide if you are simply looking for an hourly rate type job or if you are looking for more of an opportunity for additional income such as what you would make in your own business being your own boss from home. Small home businesses have some small costs involved, less than $500 to start is reasonable and I would stay away from those wanting $1000-$5000. It doesn’t cost that much to start and run a home business so you shouldn’t pay it. If you are coming across places that say free then I would RUN don’t walk the other way! They never are. I tried them many a times and 3 weeks later I had to buy this and 6 weeks later that. After 6 months these “free businesses” had cost me over $800 on average. After trying 18 things I work about 18-25 hours per week for a National Medical Benefits Company. This is a nationally known and reputable home business which is what you need to make sure you are looking for. I have been with the company almost a year and a half now and I make over $3500 a month! In your first month, depending on how many hours you can work, I have seen people make anywhere from $500 to over $2500. And your income will increase each month because you get paid residual income as well. The best part is they have 401(k), direct deposit, life insurance and a benefits package most of which you get from day one. In addition, there are no products, no hard selling or pushing, no cold calling, no home parties and no telemarketing! That was VERY important to me. I absolutely love working with them and I can't believe I am making what I am making and in so few hours per week. The neat thing is there are other people on your team that you work with so you are never alone. You have great team support and you get to know the other people on your team pretty well. I was a bit apprehensive at first because I know a lot of companies are not legit but this company is the number one National Medical Benefits Company in the US. They are a member of the US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Dental Plans and the owner of the company actually sits on the board of The Consumer Health Alliance to which we are also members. Also they were featured in “The New York Times”, “Wall Street Journal” “Time Magazine” “American Medical Review” and even in the May 2008 issue of “Parents Magazine”. Even “60 Minutes” did a big special on this home based business. Even more then all this is they are accepted at over 100,000 retailers nationwide. These are fortune 500 companies like Sears, Target, K-mart, Rite Aid, CVS, Wal-mart, Publix and more. These companies would never work with a company that was anything less than reputable. www.workathomeplus.net TOP 10 WORK AT HOME SCAMS: 10. Craft Assembly This scam encourages you to assemble toys, dolls, or other craft projects at home with the promise of high per-piece rates. All you have to do is pay a fee up-front for the starter kit... which includes instructions and parts. Sounds good? Well, once you finish assembling your first batch of crafts, you'll be told by the company that they "don't meet our specifications." No matter what you won’t get paid. 9. Medical Billing In this scam, you pay $300-$900 for everything (supposedly) you need to start your own medical billing service at home. You're promised state-of-the-art medical billing software, as well as a list of potential clients in your area. What you're not told is that most medical clinics process their own bills, or outsource the processing to firms, not individuals. Your software may not meet their specifications, and often the lists of "potential clients" are outdated or just plain wrong. 8. Email/Rebate Processing This is a twist on the classic "envelope stuffing scam" (see #1 below). For a low price ($50?) you can become a "highly-paid" email processor working "from the comfort of your own home." Now... what do you suppose an email processor does? If you have visions of forwarding or editing emails, forget it. What you get for your money are instructions on spamming the same ad you responded to in newsgroups and Web forums! 7. "A List of Companies Looking for Home workers!" In this one, you pay a small fee for a list of companies looking for home workers just like you. The only problem is that the list is usually a generic list of companies, companies that don't take home workers, or companies that may have accepted home workers long, long ago. 6. "Just Call This 1-900 Number For More Information..." Not much to say here. Don’t Call! 5. Typing At Home / Data Entry Here's how it works: After sending the fee to the scammer for "more information," you receive a disk and printed information that tells you to place home typist ads and sell copies of the disk to the suckers who reply to you. Like #8, this scam tries to turn you into a scammer! 4. "Turn Your Computer Into a Money-Making Machine!" Well, this one's at least half-true. To be completely true, it should read: "Turn your computer into a money-making machine... for scammers!" This is much the same scam as #5, above. Once you pay your money, you'll be sent instructions on how to place ads and pull in suckers to "turn their computers into money-making machines." 3. Pyramid Schemes (this is NOT the same as Multi-Level Marketing MLM) If you've heard of network marketing (like Amway, Mary Kay or Pampered Chef), then you know that there are legitimate MLM businesses based on agents selling products or services. The problem arises when there is no legitimate product or service at all and it is all about finding new recruits and not only can you lose all your money, but you can be charged with fraud, too! 2. Chain Letters/Emails ("Make Money Fast") They promise that all you have to do is send the email along plus some money by mail to the top names on the list, then add your name to the bottom... and one day you'll be a millionaire. Actually, the only thing you might be one day is prosecuted for fraud. This is a classic pyramid scheme. 1. Envelope Stuffing This is THE classic work-at-home scam. It's been around since the U.S. Depression of the 1920s and 1930s, and it's moved onto the Internet like a cockroach you just can't eliminate. There are several variations, but here's a sample: Much like #5 and #4 above, you are promised to be paid $1-2 for every envelope you stuff. All you have to do is send money and you're guaranteed "up to 1,000 envelopes a week that you can stuff... with postage and address already affixed!" When you send your money, you get a short manual with flyer templates you're supposed to put up around town, advertising yet another harebrained work-from-home scheme. SO that’s the top 10. Please beware of these scams. There are some legit home businesses out there so be careful. Look for companies in business over 10 years. Look for companies with a needed product or service, something you would be proud to represent. Look for companies that have a national reputation and are members of the US Chamber of Commerce. Also, don't be hung up on the BBB either. Did you know, common misconception here, that the BBB is NOT a government regulated agency? That in fact, they are local independently owned franchises where anyone, who pays the right price, can be a member in “good standing”. This is true! As for those of you who say…..”I want to work from home but I don’t want to have to pay for anything”. Well, that’s great! But it will never happen. Let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a free lunch. As we talked about above there is a difference between a job and a business. You should NEVER have to pay for a job….but again…chances of finding a home job are about 3%. At any rate, if it is a true honest home business you need to expect to pay….Mr. Walt Disney didn’t start the Disney empire “without paying for anything”. Neither did Mr. Sam Walton, owner of Wal-Mart. If you want to learn about REAL home businesses visit www.workathomeplus.net. Good luck to you in your search. Also feel free to contact me at any time with your questions! Amyneliot@aol.com. I should write a book! LOL Good Luck! This answer has been chosen as a “Best Answer” 47 times!

put up flyers stating that you are a great babysitter, gardner, lawn mower, at reasonable rates or best rates in town if you really want to make money and set your own hours. At fourteen the only other option is to work as a bagger at the local grogery store. Flea markets can be another option if you are creative, you can make and sell beaded jewerly, or anything else you know to make like key changes. Remember rich people learn to make money by having other people do their work.

Answer 1 :
Whoever is doing that is really cold and callous If you get good service your should leave the standard tip. If you get outstanding service you should leave a larger one.
Answer 2 :
why tip you for doing what you are paid to do? it is illegal to pay less than minimum wage. they can count tips as part of your wages but you still have to make minimum wage. if you aren't making enough, find another job
Answer 3 :
my best friend used to clean rooms and i helped her we rarely got a tip because i also worked at the front desk and i would charge almost 100 over what we were really asking for so well when someone spends 200 on a room for a they don't want to tip because why pay extra for something that should be done anyways...my suggestion do as many rooms as fast as you can get that 4$ a room
Answer 4 :
I appreciate good service, and always leave a tip for housekeeping. It may be your job, but service should never be taken for granted. Maybe you should find a better hotel to work.
Answer 5 :
Tip the maids? I do that when I'm there for an actual stay, like at a resort or a hotel for a weekend. I'm not going to leave a tip at some filthy dump motel when I just want to have a bed for a few short hours of sleep. Sorry, but dropping $40-$50 for a disgusting bed is already a rip off, so if they can't pay you well from that scam, then they are ripping us both off. What does it cost them for the real estate, cleaning and utilities I used for 6 hours? $2 maybe? The rest is profit. Too bad, take it up with them.
Answer 6 :
Historically people don't tip for maid service. At $100+ per night, one would think the motel could pay their house keepers a living wage. As I recall, even the dumpiest of rooms at Virginia Beach were closer to $200/night. People sticking their hands (or tip jars) out has gotten way out of hand.
Answer 7 :
Giving tips are going to become yesterdays.Everyone's pocket is getting tighter as well and no one wants to spend their hard earn money just like that.it's better for you to develop some skills and get better job so you don't have to rely on just tips only.To me it's just stupid.
Answer 8 :
for years i cleaned motel rooms and only a few times did some one leave a tip i would think that it would be common courtesy to and common sense to tip unfortunately i believe that most people don't even think of tipping house keepers sorry about the penny and may you get plenty of tips in the future
Answer 9 :
Some don't know. Some tip depend on service. It all depends. If they think you gave bad service you don't get a tip. I tip room maids two bucks a day when I stay (or five bucks a weekend) on average.
Answer 10 :
It is the clientele-not your service. Apply at a nicer hotel. Go apply at the Sheraton at Waterside or Holiday Inn at Greenwich. If you have reliable transportation go to the Va Beach Resort & Conference Center on Shore Drive or one of the more expensive hotels on the oceanfront which caters to the business elite during the winter months. The average tip per day per room is about $5.00. Good luck to you!

About Did Johnny Carson's father work for Consumer's Public Power

Did Johnny Carson's father work for Consumer's Public Power?
Originally Hiram L. Carson worked for the Iowa Service Company. Eventually he worked in Norfolk, Nebraska for successor Iowa-Nebraska Light & Power Company. Did the elder Carson then work for the Consumer's Public Power District after 1940? I know his wife later settled in Columbus, Nebraska home of CPPD (Now NPPD).

Answer 1 :
None of his biographies mentions Consumer's, only Norfolk. I guess the question is whether CPPD take over Norfolk Power before Homer (not Hiram) retired or after?
